What we did

Impact to date


Hiring specialist PE teachers.


STEP Partnership cluster group have organised a range of expert and qualified coaches, in dance, gymnastics, Outdoor Adventures and Activities (OAA), games etc. for half a day a week.

The teachers will coach a different year groups each term.


  • Staff training opportunities to improve confidence and skills
  • STEP partnership coaches teach alongside the teachers. Staff confidence and new skills
  • Children trying new sports and activities such as orienteering, map reading and Outdoor
  • More consistent quality within PE sessions.
  • Our own staff skills and confidence have been developed through sharing good practice.
  • Has enabled quality of PE teaching to improve.

Providing support for PE Lead Teacher.

Bought into the LA package for sports and competitions. This

provides membership with the

South Charnwood School Sports Partnership (SCSSP) who provides competitions, CPD and

network meetings for PE subject leaders.


  • Support programme for PE lead teacher.
  • PLT training days have led to more confidence of PE lead teacher.
  • Local cluster group meetings to discuss new initiatives and support with learning walksetc. has led the PE lead teacher to be consistent in observing lessons.
  • Year 1 and Year 2 visit to Loughborough Sports University to participate in Multi-sports competition. (Year 1 have been Leicestershire champions for 2 years 2012 and 2013)



Providing opportunities for children to compete.
  • Subsidising travel costs has allowed us to enter events and keep prices down and
  • More opportunities for our children to experience new sports and activities.
  • More opportunities for our children to attend competitions and festivals.
  • Regular attendance and success at LA sporting festivals.
  • Starting intra school competitions programme.
  • Allowed us to offer free transport to parents.

Providing places for children to participate in afterschool and lunchtime clubs.
  • Active lifestyles through the introduction of active lunchtime activities.
  • Sporting activities available some evening’s afterschool.
  • Increased attendance at extracurricular activities. Programmes created to enable all children to attend not just children that are talented.
  • Also a variety of new and exciting after schools clubs this year such as Fencing, Tennis, Multi-sports, Summer Sports club, Cheerleading and Dancing with props club.
  • Lunchtime sports coaches work with children and lunchtime supervisors to provide a range of new sports such as Volleyball, Basketball, Tag Rugby etc.
Swimming coaching
  • Qualified swimming coach is employed to teach and work alongside the Learning Support Assistants and Teachers.
  • Swimming is not a National Curriculum requirement for KS1. However, at Church Hill Infants we believe in providing swimming for our young children enhances our sports provision.
  • Only 29% of our Foundation Stage children have swimming lessons out of school before they start school and we believe we are developing this necessary life skill for all the children from a young age.
Dance coaching
  • Qualified dance coach is employed to teach and work alongside the Learning Support Assistants.
Pupil Insight Software
  • Insight across key demographic groups - Pupil data (e.g. gender, year group, ethnicity, free school meal eligibility and attainment level) is uploaded into the software to provide a unique and detailed understanding of pupils' views.
