Church Hill Infant School

Numicon is a fantastic resource for helping children with their core number skills. We have been using it in school for more than a year now, with both children and staff becoming more confident and enjoying using it.

Numicon uses different coloured tiles to represent each of the numbers 1 to 10. This helps to give children a concrete concept of what each number actually is - for example they can see, in their mind's eye, that '5': is a red tile with five holes, it has an odd number of holes, it is smaller than a ten but larger than a 1... this image helps with so many of the basic facts about number!

We use Numicon to help us with all aspects of maths. The tiles fit together to help with addition, can be laid over each other to represent take away and difference, can be grouped for repeated addition and multiplication and can be used to represent fractions of numbers for division. We even use them for measuring lengths and weights!

The children get really excited about using Numicon in school, and we have found that their increased confidence with numbers has had a positive impact on their overall attainment.

Numicon Curriculum Evening

We had a curriculum evening for parents and children from Years 1 and 2, sharing information and ideas about Numicon. Mr Corcoran gave a talk to explain about the tiles and how we use them, and the children helped to teach their parents what to do! It was really well attended, with exactly 100 people (parents and their children) learning together in the hall. Please see below for some of the really positive feedback that we received about the event.

"Great for visual and colour, and will definitely help my son with his maths homework. Love it!" - Year 1 Parent

"Impressed with the Numicon and how (my son) is already using them well to support his Numeracy skills. I think the visual part really helps with the learning and look forward to using them with him at home" - Year 1 Parent

"It was really good to be involved with the use of the Numicon and it will help us at home" - Year 2 Parent

"I think the Numicon way of learning maths is really useful and much easier for the children to learn, making it much more enjoyable because it's so visual. I definitely think (my son) will enjoy learning this way. - Year 1 Parent
