Church Hill Infant School

Caterpillar to butterfly life cycle

We have arranged for caterpillars to be delivered to school so we can watch them grow and each become a chrysalis. Hopefully we will then see after some time some Painted Lady butterflies!

The children have been amazed at how fast the caterpillars are growing from 1cm to about 4 cm long and 10 times the width of body in less than 2 weeks! Really interesting observations have been made.

The caterpillars are now chrysalides and were transferred to their new habitat on Friday 29th April. We are hoping to see some beautiful butterflies within 7-10 days!

On Monday 9th May our butterflies all hatched and we watched as they pumped up their wings. We observed them closely for the next few days in the habitat in school, then on Friday 13th May the whole school went outside to release them. We watched them fly away and hopefully lay some more eggs that will hatch out as caterpillars and start the cycle again.
